South Downs Show – Queen Eizabeth Park, Nr Petersfield, Hampshire
20th &21st August 2016
On a wet and windy Friday afternoon I put up the gazebo making sure it was well tied down and then loaded up the display. I arrived back on site on Saturday at 8am and was joined by Ray Betts, we set up the display in wet and windy conditions and were ready for the opening of 10am.
The theme of our display was Woodland Tools, together with our usual Whatsits and Rope Maker. The bad weather kept the public away. It was so windy that other stallholders were hanging on to their gazebos to stop them blowing away, some fragile event shelters were imploding. All in all it was a very dismal day. On Sunday the weather was much improved although there was a gazebo graveyard behind the stalls due to the bad weather overnight . Our gazebo was well tied down and survived. We had a much better day and were able to demonstrate the Rope Making and Paper Hats. One of the stalls was spinning wool from a fleece and asked if we could make a piece of rope with her wool – it proved a success.
We continued to get a stream of visitors for the display and Whatsits until ½ hour before the close when the heavens opened and the rain sent all our visitors scurrying for cover and home. We had to take down in the pouring rain and get home to start the process of drying everything.
My thanks to Ray Betts for sticking it out for the 2 days and for us it was one event that we will want to forget.
